STS on Eclipse 3.6 |
|

Last week the Eclipse Foundation released the much anticipated next version of Eclipse. You can download Eclipse 3.6 aka Helios from SpringSource's member distribution page. Also check out the New & Noteworthy for this release.
The Tools Team at SpringSource has been busy updating our developer tools to support Eclipse 3.6 and while we haven't released a new version of SpringSource Tool Suite that builds on and bundles 3.6 yet, users can now install STS on top of Eclipse 3.6.
Detailed steps to install STS from our nightly update sites can be found in the installation instructions. Please carefully follow the outlined steps in the "Installing from the Nightly Snapshot Update Site" section starting on page 9.
If you encounter issues during the installation please feel free to post to the community support forums.
If all goes as planned we'll release STS 2.3.3.M2 including the usual installers next week.
Enjoy…

Added on July 2nd, 2010 at 4:48 amThank you, this article helped me making STS work with Eclipse 3.6. So far so good, looking forward for more improvements especially with the Grails integration.

Added on July 6th, 2010 at 7:23 amThe bookmarks.xml for 3.6 contains an error. It points to http://dist.springsource.com/snapshot/TOOLS/nightly/e3.5 instead of 'e3.6'
Besides this I have problems connecting to both the 'Snapshots' and the 'Snapshots, Dependencies' sites, run into 'Read timed out' errors.

Added on July 6th, 2010 at 10:58 pmHi, I have downloaded and installed STS 2.3.3 M1. But with that release we need to install Google AppEngine plugins as an extension. I have tried to install GAE plugins more than hundred of times and posted problems at several blog and forum. Still I am not able to use GAE plugins with Spring Tool Suite 2.3.3 M1. Cause it cannot download 2 jar files from my conuntry given bellow
http://google-web-toolkit.googlecode.com/svn/2.1.0.M1/eclipse/plugin/plugins/com.google.appengine.eclipse.sdkbundle.1.3.4_1.3.4.v201005191217.jar
http://google-web-toolkit.googlecode.com/svn/2.1.0.M1/eclipse/plugin/plugins/com.google.gwt.eclipse.sdkbundle.2.1.0_2.1.0.m1-201005191217.jar
Also this two links have no resume support. After downloading about 75% it cannot download more.
So it is my request if it is possible then please inlude GAE plugins with one of next STS release.
I am specially intereste to use STS Roo for Google App Engeine application development.

Added on July 11th, 2010 at 4:07 am@Manuel, yes, we will provide STS from the Eclipse Marketplace. We are currently working through some technical hurdles.
@Dormand, we will update the GPE location for STS 2.3.3.M2. By then you should be able to install the plugins without any issue. If this problem continues please let me know and we'll provide a download link for a zipped update site archive.
@Neale, no, all has been going well. Due to travel and meetings we needed to post-pone the STS and Roo M2 release by a few days. New target is early this week. Should be anytime now.
@Maksim, you can download fully integrated installers for STS from the download site. With the installers you don't install anything from an update site. That should help you getting started in no time. Let me know if that is what you are looking for.

Added on July 18th, 2010 at 5:22 amI'm not about that, I talked about a full install without Eclipse. Install STS when Eclipse is already installed, for example from the distribution repositories, or downloaded from the site.

Added on July 19th, 2010 at 12:04 amHi my installation was successful.
Just have a quick config question.
In the previous release of the STS i.e. for eclipse 3.5, the dashboard which loads on startup could be disabled. This option appears to be missing.
Any idea how to disable it?

Added on August 15th, 2010 at 7:54 amHi, The installation instructions talk about disabling all other plugins before installing STS, do these need to remain disabled post-installation or can I re-enable them?
Thanks.

Added on January 24th, 2011 at 7:45 pmAny update for 3.6 version of STS?
C.L. says:
Added on January 25th, 2011 at 10:52 amEclipse 3.6 is provided in STS 2.5.0.
If you want to use eclipse market place, you need to install this plugin which is not present by default in STS.

Added on January 25th, 2011 at 12:51 pmthe STS 2.5.2 installation manual, finally has updated eclipse update site for STS plugin for eclipse 3.6.
I installed this a couple of wks ago for 3.6, and works like a champ. Be sure to disable all other update sites you have setup in eclipse so that STS can download w/o any conflicts. I made the mistake of just setting up the update site for STS wo reading the instructions carefully…
i had the link to the pdf in this msg orginally, but the blog marked it as spam. as long as you get STS 2.5.2 intallation pdf, you should be good to go.

Added on February 1st, 2011 at 10:48 amHi! In the detailled installation instructions, when it comes to select the components, the "Package / STS" that shows in the instructions screen capture, does not show up in my window. Is this an issue or can I ignore it?

Added on May 24th, 2011 at 3:46 pmGreetings,
After multiple tries I've concluded that there is no easy mean to add STS tools to an existing Eclipse.
Folks, life is too short, don't loose your time!
Download a full version of STS tools with eclipse.
Correct me if I'm wrong!

Added on May 25th, 2011 at 2:46 amhello Claude,
No, I feel its the security permissions of network environment(corporate or client networks) thats stopping the STS installation.
Our corporate does not permit any .exe or .msi files to be downloaded/run from pc without permissions from network admin.
thanks
